“Anything is Fair Game”: Women’s Online Chats Offer Unique Information on Wharton’s EMBA Program

November 17, 2008

Does Wharton make efforts to introduce gender diversity in incoming classes? What is it really like for women who have young children? Have any single moms ever entered the program? Is the experience what other women have expected?

As Wharton EMBA alumna Marla Driscoll put it, “anything is fair game” when it comes to asking questions in the women’s online chats.

During the chats, current students, staff and alumni field diverse questions on topics ranging from kids and professional backgrounds to GMAT scores and the curriculum to help prospective women applicants determine if our program is right for them.

As for questions about balancing the program and young kids, Driscoll, who graduated in 2001 from the East Coast program, replied that women really have to think through how they will handle family responsibilities.

She wrote, “My kids were basically school age, and we had some folks (women and men) with kids who were babies and toddlers. You'll need to have time to do your school work, so how can you make that work? … Everyone is different [and] you have to develop something that works for you.”

And yes, single moms have gone through the program. In fact, Associate Director and Admissions Committee member Diane Sharp offered to put interested applicants in touch with single moms in the program for more information.

Fielding the question about whether the program has met expectations, current student Kathy Canum wrote: “The program has been as I expected. Smart people, hard work, not hyper competitive. I will say that I thought the balancing act would be easier, but after the first semester I started to get the hang of it.”
