From Speed Coaching to Interview Workshops: Women’s Events in Wharton’s EMBA Program Provide Professional Development and Networking Opportunities

February 4, 2009

You’ve probably heard of speed dating, but speed coaching? At Wharton, speed coaching is one of the many events held for women in the EMBA program to provide a great opportunity for networking and professional development.

Part of a series at Wharton West in San Francisco called, “Celebrating Women,” students spend 20 minutes with each professional coach, focusing on themes like creating possibilities or branding yourself, says Wharton EMBA alumna Mori Taheripour, who helps organize the events.

“The coaching events are very successful because they engage the current students and alumni with development and networking opportunities, and they help us build corporate partnerships with organizations that share values like development and diversity,” she says, noting that Deloitte and Clorox have both provided coaches.

Taheripour, now a Wharton lecturer and associate director of Wharton’s Sports Business Initiative, explains that part of the EMBA experience is building a professional network that will help launch you into the next stage of your career or help you move up the corporate ladder so development and networking opportunities are very important.

She also has helped create strategic partnerships with the Financial Women’s Association in the Bay Area and Ascend, and is planning joint events with both groups.

In addition to speakers and panel discussions that are part of the “Celebrating Women” series, students also are encouraged to participate in events like the Wharton Women in Business Conference in Philadelphia.

For women thinking about applying to Wharton’s EMBA program, diversity receptions provide information about the program and admissions process. Held in the fall, the receptions include a workshop on interviewing strategies that can be useful in the EMBA application process as well in your overall professional development.

And there are occasional online chats, which are publicized in this blog and via our e-mail list.
