August 9, 2012

If you haven’t already started an online application account, you can do so nowa:  Start/Continue App.  The two biggest changes in this version are a new Essay Question (#2), which we hope will help us to get to know you better, and a few of the questions in the Recommendation Form have been updated.  The Wharton application process is designed to be holistic.  We’re interested in learning about you as a professional, as well as what makes you a unique individual.

An important part of your application is the interview.  Did you know you can schedule one before submitting your application?  In fact, we encourage it-- all we need is your resume.  Please contact the Philadelphia or San Francisco office when you have your calendar in front of you and schedule an appointment on an upcoming class day, so you can experience the program and get information that will help you as you complete your application.

Reminder:  Check our Events Page to see when we’re hosting an admissions event in your area.  And don't forget to keep checking back, as we’re adding new events regularly.  We’ll also be hosting several virtual receptions starting in September.  The schedule for those will be posted shortly.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

Prof. Cappelli Discusses Career Trends and Value of MBA
March 13, 2012

When Prof. Peter Cappelli says that times have changed in terms of careers, he isn’t exaggerating. At a recent online live webcast from Wharton | San Francisco, Prof. Cappelli spoke to prospective applicants about why it’s more important than ever to take charge of your own career.

While it was once common to expect employment at the same company for your entire career, that is clearly not the case anymore. The same can be said of succession plans and workforce planning. Companies are more likely to replace talent from the outside and spend fewer resources grooming employees for long-term employment.

As for employees, they are changing jobs on a much more frequent basis. But at the same time, people are staying in the same function longer. This raises the issue of how do you get out of your silo? And if you stay at your company, how do you continue to add value when the company can’t be sure it will need your particular skillset down the road?

An MBA degree, he said, is a good avenue to consider. “It’s up to the employee to get the skills needed and keep those skills up to date. Employees have to manage their own careers and that is a difficult thing to do. It’s something that requires initiative, but often the opportunities are in front of you and you just have to figure out how to negotiate for them.”

This may mean spending time thinking about how to ask for sponsorship since companies in today’s economy may not have tuition reimbursement programs in place. “But if you can figure out what skills will be hot then you can make the case for going back to school. And if you can get those skills into your tool belt then you’ll be in a great position to take better control of your career,” he said.

Watch the replay of the webcast, which includes a tour of Wharton’s new facility in San Francisco and a Q&A session with alumni from both the East and West Coast EMBA programs.

Wharton | San Francisco COO Shares Highlights of Move to New Facility
January 20, 2012

Having recently overseen the move of Wharton’s West Coast facility into the Hills Brother Building on San Francisco’s Embarcadero, we asked COO of Wharton | San Francisco Bernadette Birt to tell us about the move and the new campus.

Q. Students experienced the new facility for the first time in early January. How have they reacted?

There have been a lot of ‘Wows!’ which are exactly what we want to hear.  They are thrilled with the quality of the classroom experience, the number of group study rooms, and having places to connect with each other during the day. For example, we have an incredible dining space with stunning views of the San Francisco Bay where our students love to gather with their laptops and iPads to collaborate and relax as the sun sets.

Wharton’s EMBA Program Teams up with San Francisco Giants for Women’s Networking Reception
August 24, 2011

Wharton’s executive MBA program hosts a lot of events, but one of our recent panel discussions was particularly unique.  After all, it’s not every day that the School sponsors a women’s networking event  at a San Francisco Giants baseball game much less at a game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“The San Francisco Giants are a hot ticket in town,” explains Katherine Lilygren, who manages marketing and admissions at Wharton | San Francisco.  “This event was a great opportunity for us to raise awareness about Wharton’s EMBA program in San Francisco, particularly among professional women.  Diversity is very important in our classes so these types of events provide a wonderful venue for us to spread the word about our program to different audiences.”

Wharton Leadership Venture to Chilean Desert Provides Unique Learning Experience
July 22, 2011

Before coming to Wharton’s EMBA program, Hanson Wong, a principal consultant at Risk Management Solutions in New Jersey, had never swum in the waters of Antarctica, hiked across a desert or summited a volcano. In fact, he had never even gone camping much less rappelled down mountains or zip lined Hanson Wong Original   across steep chasms. However, during his two years at Wharton, he did all of these things through the Wharton Leadership Ventures Program.

“My first venture was to Antarctica, which most people only ever see from a cruise. We not only camped there, but a few of us also decided to jump in the water twice. How many people can say they did that?” says Wong, noting that he added on a week of hiking in Patagonia after that venture.
